Building a greener future

Building a greener future

By The Editor

Sustainability has become more than just a buzzword in the construction industry – it’s a driving force that is reshaping how we build for the future.

Sustainability has become more than just a buzzword in the construction industry – it’s a driving force that is reshaping how we build for the future.

From product innovation to supply chain adaptations, every aspect of the construction industry is undergoing a transformation to meet the growing demand for sustainable solutions.

At the forefront of this shift is Russell Roof Tiles, a leading manufacturer of concrete roof tiles, making substantial investments in sustainability.

Spearheading the company’s efforts is Dan Hancox, Corporate Sustainability and Development Director, tasked with navigating new initiatives and decarbonisation plans.

As Russell Roof Tiles sets its sights on a more sustainable future, Dan delves into the collaborative ways manufacturers and builders’ merchants could continue to drive forward change and pave the way for a greener future.

Transportation

One of the most impactful ways to reduce carbon emissions is through transportation optimisation, collaborating with manufacturers like Russell Roof Tiles to streamline delivery routes, maximise vehicle loads and prioritise eco-friendly transportation options such as electric trucks.

By coordinating closely and sharing information on delivery schedules and customer locations, both parties can maximise unnecessary trips and emissions while improving overall efficiency.

Product

Concrete roof tiles, for example, are known for their durability and energy-efficient manufacturing process. When compared with their similar clay counterparts extensive power is required for firing clay in a 1,000+ºC kiln for up to 48 hours.

By using products such as concrete roof tiles, can help reduce the environmental impact of construction projects while meeting the growing demand for sustainable materials.

In May this year Russell Roof Tiles also has launched its first solar PV offer to market, with the same quality credentials and easy installation as its concrete products.

Technology

Technology plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and enhancing efficiencies. Collaboration with manufacturers to adopt innovative technologies such as electrified tools and equipment is key.

Packaging

With an estimated 50,000 tonnes of plastic waste each year generated by the construction industry, it’s clear that there are unsustainable practices in the industry that also need to be addressed and adapted to meet the Government’s net zero 2050 target.

The main problem for the industry is that the majority of building materials being transported are either wrapped in single-use plastic or encased in protective polystyrene – which cannot yet be recycled.

Russell Roof Tiles, for example, has trialled recycled plastic shrink-wrap for product packaging as an eco-friendlier option.

By working together to reduce packaging waste, merchants can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and contribute to a greener economy.

Education

Effective collaboration between manufacturers and customer requires ongoing communication and education. Merchants can benefit from training and resources provided by manufacturers to better understand the environmental impact of different products and practices.

By fostering a culture of sustainability within an organisation and sharing best practices with customers, can help drive demand for eco-friendly solutions and accelerate the transition to a net-zero future.

Digitisation

Digitisation plays a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency of operations and reducing carbon emissions in the supply chain.

Paper accounts for 26 per cent of landfill, so reducing the amount of paper would immediately reduce carbon footprint[1].

Digitalisation across building supplies allows businesses to adopt a greener strategy, improve customer experience and improve supply chain relationships.

Pallet Return Scheme

Pallet return schemes are another simple yet effective way for builders’ merchants to promote sustainability in their supply chains.

By following the example set by companies such as Russell Roof Tiles, customers can contribute to waste reduction, while also enhancing customer satisfaction.

Last year alone, 18 per cent of all pallets purchased by Russell Roof Tiles were returned through the scheme, the highest percentage since introducing the scheme.

To conclude, achieving net-zero carbon emissions requires collaboration, innovation and commitment from all stakeholders in the construction industry.

Russell Roof Tiles is a leading independent pitched roof tile manufacturer providing leading UK house builders and high-profile social housing and commercial projects, where sustainability and eco-credentials are of the utmost priority.
