Fresh gloss has been added to a 13-year partnership between leading pallet pooler IPP and major paint manufacturer Crown Paints, which will see a further 30,000kg of carbon dioxide emissions cut from the supply chain every year.

Coventry-based IPP has been helping Crown’s customers paint their homes since 2009 and the new contract agreed between the two companies will save 20,000 unnecessary road miles a year.

This is thanks to IPP’s collaborative approach to tackling empty running, the environmentally-harmful process in which a vehicle travels without a cargo.

IPP has worked with Crown Paints and its 3PL provider CEVA Logistics to streamline the supply chain, meaning fewer empty journeys are needed to collect pallets and return them to Crown’s production sites.

Shelley Harris, commercial director at IPP, said: “We’re delighted to renew our relationship with Crown Paints and continue to support the business to meet its retailer and consumer demand through our sustainable pallet pooling supply chain.

“We are dedicated to helping our customers reap the environmental rewards and cost savings that can be achieved with a smarter approach to pallet transportation and logistics.

“While many companies are waking up to the potential of the circular economy, especially in the wake of COP26, it is hard-wired into our DNA and an integral part of how we work with our customers.

“Our process of collection, inspection and repair saves both emissions and costs by better utilising our haulier network. It’s an extremely effective solution for all involved.”

Michael Stevens, head of logistics and planning at Crown UK & Ireland, said: “Developing trusted partnerships with key suppliers who share our ambitious sustainability goals is key to us at Crown Paints – as we progress on our journey to be carbon neutral in our own operations by 2025.

“It’s important our high-quality products reach retailers and the end customer safely, efficiently and sustainably in the same excellent condition as when they leave our production sites.

“This truly is a win-win situation and we are thrilled with the results of this partnership with IPP, which only becomes stronger year-on-year as a result of our continued collaboration.”

Crown Paints is owned by Hempel, a world-leading coatings supplier for the decorative, protective, marine, container and yacht markets.

IPP is part of the Netherlands-based Faber Group and supplies approaching 70 million pallets to the FMCG industry every year.
