As part of a push to tackle youth unemployment, the Government’s new apprenticeship scheme expansion is expected to benefit 50,000 young people. Leading professional services recruiter, Gi Pro UK’s Operations Director, Louise Bragg, says the latest apprenticeship pledge could ease labour market stagnation, and create a new era of AI driven learning and development.

Offering recruitment services and technical solutions across professional services – including engineering & manufacturing, technical engineering, facilities management and energy - Gi Pro UK sees first-hand the impact of AI across entry level roles and the importance of upskilling.

As young people face a challenging entry-level job market, with advancements in AI stripping out some entry level roles, latest data from the Office for National Statistics found that an estimated 12.7 per cent of all people aged 16 to 24 years in the UK were not in education, employment or training (NEET) in July to September 2025. In addition, an estimated 13.4 per cent of young men (up 0.3 percentage points on the quarter) and 11.9 per cent of young women (down 0.5 percentage points on the quarter) were NEET.

Louise believes this pledge is an important step for young people entering the labour market and should be embraced by both candidates and employers. “The latest generation of candidates are facing blockers at every turn; with the rise of AI there are fewer opportunities for those wishing to join the workforce in an entry-level position. However, this latest pledge shows a glimmer of hope, providing a platform for young people to get their foot in the door. Starting at the bottom and working your way up will always be the best way for young people to learn, develop and progress, which shows the importance apprenticeship schemes play.
“It’s more important than ever that young people have options, but it requires the support of employers to ensure this pledge can be a success. Offering opportunities and providing new career paths could be the answer to getting people in work. Without the chance to succeed, we’ll remain stuck at this level of NEET young people, which is why initiatives that will give people a push to find employment, and give them hope, could be a real turning point.”

In the Autumn Budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves portioned £725m for the scheme over the next three years, and short courses will be offered from spring next year. Focusing on AI, hospitality and engineering roles, the expansion will include a pilot programme for mayors to connect young people with local employers.

Louise added: “AI is now a key element of our upskilling opportunities for employees, as we not only see the huge rewards of implementing innovative solutions, but we also recognise the importance of remaining ahead of the curve. Entry-level roles are being predominantly impacted so now is the time for young people to embrace apprenticeship opportunities. Careers are no longer a linear experience; it’s about finding an entry route and remaining determined. Upskilling is a key element to any successful career, so beginning through an apprenticeship offers great insight and opportunity for development.
“We see that roles are no longer about just the job you’re applying for, they’re also about an individual’s ability to upskill and adapt. This scheme is the perfect opportunity for young people to be bold, take chances and try something new. The recruitment landscape is constantly evolving, businesses are harnessing the power of AI to grow innovative and forward-thinking businesses, creating an opening for proactive, dynamic individuals.”
